Advances in Later Crusades Research

SSCLE Porto Conference, 29 June–3 July 2026


Recent decades have seen significant advances in our understanding of the later crusades (post-1291) - including in aspects of leadership, propaganda, financing and recruitment, aims and aspirations, and the changing role of the papacy. This session aims to showcase the latest research on this fascinating topic.


We invite proposals for 20-minute papers exploring new perspectives on the later crusades. Topics are not limited to, but might include:


  • Diplomacy and statecraft

The Society for the Study of the Crusades and the Latin East (SSCLE), is an international society of scholars founded in 1980. It aims to promote research and fieldwork, coordinating resources, informing its members of resources and ongoing studies, and promoting awareness of its members and the interested public in developments in the field.
