The year 2026 marks the 460th birthday of the Hospitaller convent-city of Valletta, in Malta, on 28 March 1566. Taking its cue from this anniversary, the ninth Military Orders conference will be held in Malta and focus on the theme of ‘Documents & Monuments’.

The conference aims to re-evaluate the historical significance of Innocent IV's papacy and its relationship to the crusade movement through rigorous research and scholarly dialogue.

Bringing together scholars from across disciplines, it encourages narratives that trace the movement of ideas, texts, images, everyday artefacts and peoples across regions from the Mediterranean to Asia and the Americas.

Join Dr Steve Tibble to explore the most eccentric characters of the medieval period: the Hospitallers who went rogue on crusade.

The conference is an invitation to transcend disciplinary and institutional boundaries by bringing together contributors from diverse backgrounds, working in France and around the world.
