About the Event

This prize is dedicated to the memory of two distinguished English historians of the medieval church and canon law: Christopher and Mary Cheney. The prize of £500 will be awarded once every four years beginning in 2028 for the best essay on medieval church history published in the preceding four years (2024-2028 in the first instance). Essays published as journal articles or book-chapters can be submitted (in pdf format). Essays in English, French, German, Italian, or Spanish are eligible, but their authors must be early career scholars and provide proof that their doctorate was awarded no more than ten years before submission of their essay to this prize scheme.

Preference may be given to essays exploring medieval canon law and its application, but medieval canon law here is very broadly conceived. Essays can address a wide range of topics relevant to medieval church history, including the papacy, religious orders, bishops…
